Green Pastures was set up by Mary Lian, an experienced Chartered Educational Psychologist with more than 27 years serving in the special needs field. Lian started work as a Psychologist in a special school in 1996 before being trained as a primary school teacher at the National Institute of Education. She has taught in primary schools and has good experience as a Learning Support Coordinator teaching children with language and literacy support needs. She was awarded the MOE Postgraduate scholarship to study Educational Psychology at University College London in 2002 and served as a Senior Specialist in Educational Psychology in the Psychological Services Branch of the Ministry of Education for more than 10 years. During this time, she has led, coordinated and trained many batches of learning support coordinators and mentored many of the younger psychologists in school service delivery. She has served many primary and secondary schools by providing psycho-educational assessments and consultations to parents, teachers and school leaders to help support children with a range of SENs.
Lian is a qualified mediator for the Feuerstein instrumental enrichment programme, a form of cognitive therapy. In addition, she is trained in dyslexia remediation (using both the Orton-Gillingham approach and the Spalding Method) and in teaching children with Mathematics difficulties. Lian set up Green Pastures in 2013 to focus on providing learning, behavioural and especially cognitive interventions to individuals with learning difficulties as well as psycho-educational assessment services. Her company also provides locum educational psychology services to MOE as well as supervision and training to younger psychologists. She is currently also lecturing and tutoring part-time with the National Institute of Education and Singapore Institute of Technology and provides clinical supervision for trainee Educational Psychologists in the MAAP and Trainee SEN officers in the DISE.
Lian is a believer of the neuroplasticity of the brain and believes strongly that children’s cognitive functions necessary for academic learning can be enhanced through helping them to ‘learn how to think and think how to learn’. She also believes in working within the child’s systems of support, where possible to mediate their learning.
Apart from her professional life, Lian is a proud mother of four children who never fail to amaze her and teach her what is most important in life. She is married to Christopher, an Occupational Therapist working in a hospital. As a family, they love nature walks and beach holidays.
