Our Assessment Process:
Understanding your concerns:
First our SEN coordinator will have a telephone chat with you about your concerns and why you think your child may need an assessment. If we think this may not be the best way forward for your child, we may recommend another agency or professional who may be better able to meet you and your child’s needs. This chat is brief and usually take about 10-15 mins.
Prior to the scheduled assessment appointment, additional information may be requested from parents and school such as past assessment reports, school reports, worked samples. Where necessary and appropriate, parents and teachers may be asked to complete a questionnaires and/or rating scales. This helps us to build a picture of your child’s developmental history and a general pattern of strengths and weaknesses.
Based on the initial information gathered, we can usually recommend the type of assessments to be carried out. We will also inform you about the expected fees. Depending on the nature of the concerns, a range of 1-3 assessment sessions may be arranged. Each assessment session would usually last 1.5-2 hours. You will also be given guidance on how to communicate the purpose of the session with your child.
For some of you, we may suggest that you and your child meet with our educational psychologist at the centre for an informal assessment first to have a better understanding of your child’s needs before proposing further assessments. The informal assessment also allows our psychologist to build rapport with your child and understand what the best conditions are for your child to perform well.
The Assessment:
The assessment takes place in a cosy room located within a child friendly mall. We will provide information on how you can have a conversation with your child about the assessment process and how you can make the experience more enjoyable for your child.
On the day of the assessment, you’ll accompany your child for the first 15 mins of the session so that we can orientate your child to the place and build rapport with him/her. When rapport has been established, we will invite you to leave the room so that we can proceed with the assessments.
What Happens Next:
We will arrange a discussion with you over zoom usually within 2 weeks of the assessment. We will explain the assessment findings systematically and clearly using visuals that in our experience parents find helpful. We will also share with you our insights and recommendations and the diagnosis if appropriate. Every child has strengths, by understanding their challenges, they can get on the right path to achieve their own unique potential. With your permission, we would also like to spend time with your child to explain what they are really good at and why they may find some parts of school hard and how they can help themselves. It would also be helpful for the teachers in the school to understand your child’s profile. Hence, you may request for us to conduct:
A child friendly feedback session to help your child make sense of his/her strengths and challenges.
A feedback session with school personnel to help them understand your child’s profile and how best to support him/her in class/school.
A report will be emailed to you three weeks after the feedback session. Rest assured that the assessment findings will be kept confidential.
